Purpose
The official purposes of Habitat for Humanity are to partner with specific programs in habitat development globally, by constructing modest but adequate housing, and to associate with other organizations functioning with purposes consistent with those of Habitat, as stated in the Articles of Incorporation to witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world:

1. By working in cooperation with God’s people in need to create a better habitat in which to live and work.

2. By working in cooperation with other agencies and groups that have a kindred purpose.

3. By exemplifying the Gospel of Jesus Christ through loving acts and the spoken and written word.

4. By enabling an expanded number of persons from all walks of life to participate in this ministry.

5. By helping people to help themselves.

How does Habitat for Humanity Work?
Habitat homes are built through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials.  Homes re sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable, no-interest loans.  In this way, Habitat for Humanity does not build houses for families, but with families in need.  Habitat for Humanity is based on the “theology of the hammer”, which states that Habitat work sites are places to build relationships as well as houses.  As described by founder Millard Fuller, “We know that many people cannot agree on many subjects.  We’re Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, black and white, rich and poor.  But Habitat is one of the few organizations—really, one of the few movements—that brings people together agreeing on a hammer.”
