About Habitat

About Habitat

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls builds and preserves homes with people in need who might not have a secure, safe home another way. We have built or rehabilitated over 149 homes since our inception in 1989, helping 231 adults and 602 children! We have completed over 134 Neighborhood Revitalization and A Brush With Kindness projects since 2010. We serve the counties of Minnehaha, Lincoln and Turner.

Studies show owning a safe, affordable home impacts the health of the family members, improves children’s grades, and leads to more successful long-term goals and dreams, as well as broadens the tax base in a community.

New construction partner families participate in a stringent application process that takes several months. They participate in educational classes covering home insurance, taxes and financial management; prove an ability to help build the home; and repay a 0% interest mortgage. If you’re interested in being a Habitat Sioux Falls partner family, or know of someone who could benefit from Habitat home ownership, visit our Home ownership page.

Neighborhood Revitalization (NR) families also follow an application process. The condition of the owner-occupied home is surveyed and the preservation needs compared to the services we offer. The home owner reimburses Habitat Sioux Falls for the materials and agrees to partner with the volunteers on work day. Click here for more information about NR.

A third way Habitat supports affordable, stable housing is through our ReStore. We sell new and gentle used building materials and home goods that have been donated by individuals and corporations. The store is open to the public and sells the items at about 30–40% of retail. ReStore profits fund an additional two builds in Sioux Falls a year! Learn more about how you can help the ReStore or how the store can help you.
