Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry.  It was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller in Americus, Georgia.  Since that time, more than 200,000 homes have been dedicated in 100 nations and 2000 affiliates worldwide.

In Sioux Falls the first meeting to determine community interest in having an affiliate was held at the First Presbyterian Church in 1989.  Those 100 people authorized a steering committee to pursue the idea.  Led by John and Paula Bylsma, the Greater Sioux Falls affiliate (serving Minnehaha and Lincoln counties), was granted its charter in 1990.

In 2000, led by community leaders Larry and Suzanne Toll, Roger Fredrikson and Bishop Robert Carlson, a successful campaign led to the construction of a new 22,000 square foot warehouse and ReStore facility, where donated building materials are stored for use and/or sold to the public at bargain prices.

In 18 years Habitat has built or renovated 74 homes.  Last year 387 people – 110 adults and 277 children slept in homes they helped build with Habitat and our caring community.

The Sioux Falls affiliate is governed by a volunteer board of directors, chaired currently by Eric Lundin.  Nine committees of volunteers help guide the work of the affiliate.  Eleven staff complete the team of people committed to carrying out the Habitat mission.

The affiliate is autonomous.  However, all affiliates are asked to tithe 10% of unrestricted dollars, to be distributed through the international offices and sent to other affiliates in other parts of the world.  Currently our dollars go to support builds in Mexico.
